July 15th: Alpine – Afton: Hey mister postman, is there a letter for me!

A very good motivation to cycle is watching the Tour de France on American TV. One has to take the commercials every 5 minutes with it…but at least the last 10K is shown without interruptions and boy, today it was a good race. Thinking I could be Thor today, I jumped on my bicycle and started out. Anyone in Alpine – it seems that The Bull Moose is some place to check out (maybe). Today’s ride takes us through the Star Valley – where the Salt River runs. It is known as farming country and I’m looking out for cows and crops.

A few small towns are scattered around. Etna is the first one and my first stop at the grocery/post office. A picture and a request: “would you please write your name on the bench in front of our shop – and where you come from?” It’s easy to do this!

Next town is Thayne, known for its cheese factory. It’s still too soon for ice cream and I just buy a piece of pepper cheese! Yummie!
Next town is Groover: to reach this town I had to close my mouth when I was cycling along the marshes – small insects where flying around and they made a good mix with the stuff from the cottonwood trees. Another quaint post office marks this town.
The last 5 miles to Afton always feel like a disaster: I’ve reached this town after cycling from Jackson Hole in one day or starting from Hoback Junction but I felt the same each time about those last miles: they are boring and into the wind and slightly uphill. The largest arch with antlers stands in this town: it crosses the whole wide main street.
The movie theater is showing…Harry Potter! Wow – they are really up to date! Across from the High Country Inn is the Red Baron still flying! Tomorrow is a hard day!
