For the first time I checked into the airport with my computer and boy … did it go fast at the airport! Almost no standing in lines – I just had to check in my luggage and after 5 minutes my backpack was on the belt to the plane. Going through security was also a piece of cake, and very soon I found myself with almost 2 hours to spare at the airport. Time to work a little! Concourse E serves all those small planes – it is just one gate next to the other. The flight took only 40 minutes and I looked outside the window all the time. It is so great to recognize all the roads I’ve already cycled on (and will still be cycling on in 14 days). In the distance I saw Fish Lake and Boulder Mountain – two of my biggest rides still to come. Also Cedar Breaks looked as if it’s nothing from the air – I think it’s much nicer to see when you’re standing there. But flying over Zion National Park was a great treat! St.George has a new airport which is now about 10 miles out of town. Luckily the St. George Shuttle van was standing outside on the parking lot. The driver was eating cold celery and at one point I thought he was offering me some – it was just his business card. I still find it strange that exits of Interstates are not numbered in logical order from 1 to … but the exit number is the distance from the border. So is exit 6 on the Interstate 6 miles from the southern border Utah. Next number was not 7 but 8… so 8 miles from the border. As we drove passed the exit of Bluff street I told the driver I needed to get to that street – he thought I had meant a different hotel! I came in my hotel around 1 pm and was lucky to check in. It is getting used to the heat here – but with the low humidity it’s not too bad. Now I have the airco running – something I didn’t need before. For now it’s just waiting for tomorrow – when my sister and her family will pick me up on the way to Zion. I hope they have a good time in Death Valley!
