RECALCULATE: it’s not the 20th year but the 21st summer I’m cycling in the USA!
Wow, stepping outside and a bouquet of flowers is hanging in front of my motel room.
On my way out of Manti I noticed a nice house for sale.
This city has several old brick houses – from the Mormon Pioneers. Just outside of the city a grey building shows up: a jail. I guess I won’t buy the house. Sterling is the next small town and Thomas desperately needs to do something about his shop!
Ninemile reservoir looks like an oasis in the desert. The surrounding white and red rocks reflect in the water and sunflowers (or a kind of) make the picture even complete.
This stretch of the ride is beautiful and I enjoy with several stops along the way.
Just before entering Gunnison another prison is visible. Guess that’s why they call it GUNnison.
Two miles along US 89 and I hop into a gas station. You never know what’s going to happen and in this weather with the sun beating all day long, I need some cool water in my bottles. Road work slows me down – even stops me, to let traffic go through.
Flagmen must be able to stand in the heat for a long time – especially with all the traffic around. After passing the post office of Axtell I notice the town of Redmond to my right.
Salt on tables of restaurant comes from this town. I need to get to Salina and notice some strange looking hills: had they been dark red, I would name them “Cuberdon” or “Nose” mountains – that candy!
Salina is the last service town if you go to the east. It’s 110 miles before one can get some service again. Luckily I’m going south. Before leaving town – yes! A gas station stop, because I can already use some teabags in my bottles and serve hot tea! Let’s fill the bottles with ice and water. It’s another 18 miles to Richfield and this section is boring and it’s always hard work: headwinds and warm temperatures. I notice my two good buddies in the grass in the town of Aurora
and once under I 70 it’s a count-off to reach Richfield. As most of the towns here, the main street is wide.
I head to the ice cream shop, before checking into the motel where air co feels like heaven on earth!
