Two parts in today’s route: in the morning Salt Lake Valley, in the afternoon Utah Valley. Headed out of Salt Lake City on a street named 700E, meaning this is the 7th street from Main Street – on the East side of it. It’s a great road with a decent bicycle lane and several warnings to share the road with bicyclists. The weather forecast is excellent: no rain to be expected the first coming days and temperatures around 93F (about 33°C). Again I get from one town into the other, without any break in the city look environment. South Salt Lake, Murray, Midvale, Sandy bring me already 16 miles from the start.
Some funny signs and the Salt Lake Real Soccer stadium make welcome stops on the uphill.
Time for a refuel in the gas station where Gatorade is in order (and a chocolate chip cookie). Now under I 15, crossing the Jordan River to reach Riverton.
In the distance I notice the big Kennecott Coppermine.
Only Bluffdale is to come and as its name says – it’s uphill on this bluff. At the top is the Veteran’s Memorial.
Now we cross Utah county line and in the distance lays Utah lake. Here I get a chance to take some more rural roads along pig farms and wheat land.
Big houses stand along the road once I crossed the Jordan River again. Turning on US 89 South (my good old buddy) it’s mall time. American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lindon and Orem all give me several chances to get into a cool environment and drink a Coke float.
To my left the high peak of Timpanogos Mt. still holds some snow on its top, while Utah Lake lays to my far right. In good shape and happy I reach Provo – hometown of BYU (Brigham Young University), which is a university where strict rules concerning your way of living exists. It is hard to enter this university, so all students are proud to be part of this community. The only thing I still have to do is scrubbing off the salt I gathered while sweating in the sun and hair drying wind (= warm!)
